All Grant Recipients

Each year the Albany Public Schools Foundation (APSF) receives classroom grant applications from teachers throughout the 21 schools in the Greater Albany Public School district. By the deadline of October 15^th of this year, the Foundation had received a total of 105 grant applications equaling over $94,000 in requests.

On October 29^th, the APSF Allocations Committee joined together with other community partners and recommended the funding or partial funding of 84 of these applications for a total of $50,000.  The funded enrichment-based classroom grants, approved by the APSF Board, ranged from electronics to materials for art, reading, music, and physical education.

One of the Foundation’s community partners, Samaritan Diagnostic Imaging Services, jumped at the chance to help Jennifer Bornheimer, a health teacher at West Albany High School, with her request for colored paper. The colored paper helps Mrs. Bornheimer to teach her students about organization. In her 21 years teaching she realizes “that one of the most significant obstacles to a student’s success is the lack of organization.”

Another community partner that stepped up to help was Baldwin General Contracting. The construction company was notified that South Albany High School teacher Matthew West (pictured above) needed funds to help maintain and grow his CTE (Career Technical Education) Manufacturing and Construction classes. They helped fund his request with a match from the Foundation in order to purchase tools and supplies for his programs.

Cada año, la fundación Albany Public Schools Foundation (APSF por sus siglas en inglés) recibe solicitudes de subvenciones de los maestros para los salones de clase entre todas las 21 escuelas del distrito escolar de Greater Albany. En la fecha límite el 15 de octubre de este año, la fundación recibió un total de 105 solicitudes equivalentes a más de $94,000 en pedidos.

El 29 de octubre, el comité de la fundación APSF, se unió con socios comunitarios y recomendaron el financiamiento o financiamiento parcial de 84 de estas solicitudes para un total de $50,000.  Las subvenciones para los salones de clases financiadas para el enriquecimiento, aprobadas por la Mesa Directiva de la fundación APSF, variaron desde electrónicos hasta materiales para arte, lectura, música y educación física.

The annual Wax Museum is something everyone looks forward to at Liberty. Students in 5th grade get to choose a person to research, make a creative display, write and memorize a speech about their life, and dress up like the person. On the day of the Wax Museum the students set up their spot and wait for someone to stand in front of them. That’s when they come to life! The kids did a terrific job with their research and staying in character.

One of our 5th grade teachers, Mr. Nazarian, leads a group called the Nature Club here at Liberty. Kids and their families can meet up once a month to either hike or do trail maintenance together. For the September event they worked with SOLVE to pick up trash at Bowman Park. It was a great turn out with multiple bags of garbage picked up off the trails and pulled out of the river!

The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427), a historic and much needed investment in K-12 schools. Greater Albany Public Schools could be able to access an estimated $5.5 million per year through a state application process.

Districts are allowed four broad uses for the grant proposals:

1. Increasing instructional time
2. Addressing student health and safety needs
3. Increasing adults/decreasing class size
4. Expanding well-rounded learning opportunities.

Programs must also meet students’ behavioral and mental health needs and increase academic achievement as well as reduce disparities among student groups.

We want to be sure to invest these resources in alignment with our community vision. In conjunction with a new Strategic Plan, input from parents, teachers, staff, students, and the community at large will shape the future of Greater Albany Public Schools!

La Legislatura de Oregón aprobó y la Gobernadora firmó la Ley de Éxito Estudiantil de $ 2 mil millones (HB 3427), una inversión histórica y muy necesaria para las escuelas desde Kínder hasta el 12 grado. Las Escuelas Públicas de Greater Albany, podrían acceder a un estimado de $ 5.5 millones por año a través de un proceso de solicitud estatal.

Los distritos tienen cuatro usos generales para las propuestas de subvención:

1. Incremento del tiempo de instrucción.
2. Abordar las necesidades de salud y seguridad de los estudiantes. 
3. Aumento de adultos/disminución del tamaño de la clase.
4. Expandir oportunidades de aprendizaje integrales.

Los programas también deben satisfacer las necesidades de salud mental y conductual de los estudiantes y aumentar el rendimiento académico, así como reducir la desproporción entre los grupos de estudiantes.

In addition to facilities updates, Liberty is getting a new parent loop this summer!  With the Greater Albany Public Schools bond funds, HMK company is constructing a more efficient, safe way to get students to and from school each day.  Construction is due to be completed before the start of the school year, but we won’t have a new entrance until summer of 2020.  That means that we will still use the current front entrance for the 2019/20 school year.  See the project plans for more information (Liberty Parent Loop Plans).
