The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427), a historic and much needed investment in K-12 schools. Greater Albany Public Schools could be able to access an estimated $5.5 million per year through a state application process.

Districts are allowed four broad uses for the grant proposals:

1. Increasing instructional time
2. Addressing student health and safety needs
3. Increasing adults/decreasing class size
4. Expanding well-rounded learning opportunities.

Programs must also meet students’ behavioral and mental health needs and increase academic achievement as well as reduce disparities among student groups.

We want to be sure to invest these resources in alignment with our community vision. In conjunction with a new Strategic Plan, input from parents, teachers, staff, students, and the community at large will shape the future of Greater Albany Public Schools!

La Legislatura de Oregón aprobó y la Gobernadora firmó la Ley de Éxito Estudiantil de $ 2 mil millones (HB 3427), una inversión histórica y muy necesaria para las escuelas desde Kínder hasta el 12 grado. Las Escuelas Públicas de Greater Albany, podrían acceder a un estimado de $ 5.5 millones por año a través de un proceso de solicitud estatal.

Los distritos tienen cuatro usos generales para las propuestas de subvención:

1. Incremento del tiempo de instrucción.

In addition to facilities updates, Liberty is getting a new parent loop this summer!  With the Greater Albany Public Schools bond funds, HMK company is constructing a more efficient, safe way to get students to and from school each day.  Construction is due to be completed before the start of the school year, but we won’t have a new entrance until summer of 2020.  That means that we will still use the current front entrance for the 2019/20 school year.  See the project plans for more information (Liberty Parent Loop Plans).

ON THE 9TH of July, the two newly elected school board members of GAPS, Michael Thomson and Eric Aguinaga, were sworn in by Board Chair Ward in a special session.

Meet our New Members!

Eric Aguinaga

As a longtime Albany resident, husband, father, and businessman, Eric Aguinaga has learned our community is only as great as the time we invest in it. With his experience as a United States Air Force Veteran and as a former commercial sales representative, he brings a unique background and skill set to the school board. 

Eric understands and appreciates the hard work in which our community is founded on and enjoys spending his time volunteering with the Albany Public School Foundation, Albany Carousel, Albany Aquatics Association, Jackson Street Youth Services, and serving on the GAPS School Board. 

Michael Thomson

Michael Thomson grew up in Washington and graduated from Evergreen State College in Olympia, where he worked at the capitol. He and his wife have lived in Albany for twelve years, serving on city committees and with non-profit organizations, including the Central-Takena PTA. They are also active at St. Mary’s Parish.

Growing up with parents who were school teachers, Michael has always had an interest in public education, and since his daughter has been attending school, he has been heavily involved at GAPS. His wish and goal for all GAPS kids is for them to have as many positive experiences as his daughter has had.

Eric Aguinaga

Eric Aguinaga, residente de Albany desde hace mucho tiempo, esposo, padre y hombre de negocios, ha aprendido que nuestra comunidad es tan buena como el tiempo que invertimos en ella. Veterano de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos y ex representante de ventas comerciales de Les Schwab, aporta a la Mesa Directiva conocimientos y habilidades únicas.

Eric comprende y aprecia el arduo trabajo en el que se basa nuestra comunidad y disfruta pasar su tiempo como voluntario en la Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Albany, el Carrusel de Albany, la Asociación Acuática de Albany, los Servicios Juveniles de Jackson Street y el servir en la Mesa Directiva de GAPS.

Michael Thomson

Michael Thomson creció en Washington y se graduó de la universidad Evergreen State College en Olympia, donde trabajó en la Capitolio. Él y su esposa han vivido en Albany durante doce años, sirviendo en comités de la ciudad y con organizaciones sin fines de lucro, incluida la Asociación de Padres y Maestros (PTA por sus siglas en ingles) de Central-Takena. GREATER ALBANY PUBLIC SCHOOLS and the Albany Public Library have partnered to make sure that every GAPS student has a public library card!

All schools should have provided all K-12 students with an ID card with a name and barcode to use at the public library. There are excellent summer programs for all ages at the public library, and access to resources, so now is a good time to make sure you have both accounts linked. Parents should check with individual schools if they are not sure if they granted permission at registration or not.

How to access online resources with your GAPS/Albany Public Library student account:

1. Go to http://bit.ly/GAPS-APL
2. At the log-in screen, enter your Student ID Number for your Library Card Number
3. Your PIN/Password = the first three letters of your first name (all lowercase) + the last 3 digits of your ID #

You can also use the internet services at the library by using this login information. There are many other library resources available to you online, including Library2go (digital versions of currently popular print titles you can check out online). We love our libraries!

I GREW up in Albany,” says Sterling Bristow, a project specialist for HMK Company. “And I attended Liberty, Memorial, and West.”

Built in 1949, the bricks of Liberty Elementary School gleam bright. Though it has been well taken care of throughout the years, the building is aging and it sits on a large block, sharing the space with Memorial Middle and West Albany High School, which can cause crowding.

Sterling is heading the critical facility upgrades to Liberty, which is using part of the construction bond funds for the district.

“A company out of Salem won the bid for the work being done,” he explains. “We’re going to increase the number of parking spaces and add a parent loop to divert traffic, which is clogging the street. They’ll excavate, tear up the old lot, and then pave it. There’ll also be landscaping to make it look nice.”

Sterling graduated West Albany in 2012. After high school, he took classes at LBCC and then transferred to OSU for business. He interned for HMK Company last May and started full-time in January.

“I’m excited to have a role in a project where I grew up. It’s great to be able to give back.” He grins. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
