Rachel Smith, PhD, RN, Director of Health Services for Greater Albany Public Schools (GAPS), recently earned the Oregon School Nurse Administrator of the Year award from the Oregon School Nurses Association (OSNA). This prestigious award was announced at OSNA’s state conference on April 21 in Ashland.

“It has been an exciting journey growing our Health Services programs at GAPS, especially our nursing team, and I am truly honored to have received this award,” Smith said. “I am proud to work alongside our amazing and talented team here at GAPS.”

Smith has worked for Greater Albany Public Schools since May 2019. She has worked as a nurse in Corvallis and Baltimore before leading the GAPS Health Services team. Smith also previously served as a clinical nursing instructor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She has a PhD in history from the University of Illinois, and holds a bachelor’s in nursing from the University of Maryland. 

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of a statewide award for the work that they’ve done over the past year,” said Interim Superintendent Rob Saxton. “Rachel has demonstrated incredible energy, dedication, intelligence, and common sense in helping the district work through the most challenging of times.”

Smith received more than a dozen nominations for the award from her colleagues at GAPS. The letters detail how Smith was a leader as the district weathered COVID challenges. “Nurse Rachel attended countless meetings with county and state health officials. Where she really shined was in her ability to take this information and make it understandable for us so we could keep school operating as smoothly and safely as we could under the circumstances,” wrote Melanie Casprowiak, principal of Waverly Elementary. 

Jodi Dodd, principal of Liberty Elementary, also pointed to Smith’s COVID response in her nomination letter. “Whenever there was a new announcement from the state regarding a change that schools would have to make, Rachel would calmly and intelligently guide us. She found the words that could squelch the fears of all of us,” Dodd wrote. 

In addition to Smith’s leadership during the COVID pandemic, colleagues wrote about her willingness to go above and beyond for students. “Despite being extremely busy with all the health needs a big district like GAPS has, she is accessible day and night,” wrote Christy Gill, principal at Meadow Ridge Elementary. “She answers texts and takes calls whenever we need immediate guidance and support on a variety of health issues.”

Under Smith’s leadership, the GAPS Health Services team was established in July 2021 to collaborate efforts and create a comprehensive student support system for health services. Directora de Servicios de Salud reconocida por asociación de enfermeras escolares 

La Sra. Rachel Smith, PhD, RN, Directora de Servicios de Salud de las Escuelas Públicas de Greater Albany (GAPS por sus siglas en inglés), ganó recientemente el premio Administradora de Enfermeras Escolares del Año de Oregón de la Asociación de Enfermeras Escolares de Oregón (OSNA por sus siglas en inglés). Este prestigioso premio fue anunciado en la conferencia estatal de OSNA el 21 de abril en la ciudad de Ashland. 

“Ha sido un camino emocionante hacer crecer nuestros programas de Servicios de Salud en GAPS, especialmente nuestro equipo de enfermería, y me siento verdaderamente honrada de haber recibido este premio”, dijo Smith. “Estoy orgullosa de trabajar junto a nuestro increíble y talentoso equipo aquí en GAPS”. 

La Sra. Smith ha trabajado para las Escuelas Públicas de Greater Albany desde mayo de 2019. Trabajó como enfermera en Corvallis y Baltimore antes de liderar el equipo de Servicios de Salud de GAPS. Smith también se desempeñó anteriormente como instructora de enfermería clínica en la Universidad de Maryland, Baltimore. Tiene un doctorado en historia de la Universidad de Illinois y una licenciatura en enfermería de la Universidad de Maryland.

Albany students provide ideas for the future of their city

The following press release was provided to the district from the City of Albany.

Over 70 Albany elementary and middle school students participated in this year’s inaugural local competition as part of the long-running Oregon Mayors Association “If I Were Mayor” statewide student contest.

Students were asked, “What would you do as mayor?” Students in the fourth and fifth grade category made posters while middle school students wrote short essays. Their entries were judged on creativity, clarity, grammar, and understanding of local government and the position of mayor. The local finalists had lunch with the Mayor last Friday at the Riverfront Community Center where they received a certificate and water bottle from Mayor Alex Johnson II.

Mikayla Chaffins, an eighth-grader at North Albany Middle School was chosen by judges as the winner of the middle school essay competition. At Friday’s lunch with the mayor she was awarded a cash prize and gift certificates to Splatterbox and the Pix Theatre. 

Brynlee Washburn, a fifth-grader at Liberty Elementary School made the winning poster this year. Her cash prize and gift certificates to Splatterbox and Albany Parks & Recreation were presented in front of her class on Tuesday, April 12.

Brynlee and Mikayla will now move on as Albany’s representatives in the statewide competition where they will each be eligible for a $500 prize from the Oregon Mayors Association. 

All of the poster entries are on display in the Sharon Konopa Garden Room on the first floor of the main Albany Public Library, 2450 14th Avenue SE, from April 12-23 during regular hours.

Information about next year’s local competition will be on the website and City of Albany social media accounts starting in January 2023.

Estudiantes de Albany aportan ideas para el futuro de su ciudad

Más de 70 estudiantes de escuelas primarias y secundarias de Albany, participaron en la competencia local inaugural de este año como parte del concurso estatal de estudiantes “Si yo fuera alcalde” de la Asociación de Alcaldes de Oregón.

Se preguntó a los estudiantes: “¿Qué harías como alcalde?” Los estudiantes en la categoría de cuarto y quinto grado hicieron carteles mientras que los estudiantes de secundaria, escribieron ensayos cortos. Earlier this month, families with students enrolled in the district’s two Remote Instructional Model (RIM) schools were notified this current academic year will be the final year of RIM. 

Federal funds to target this program have been spent, and in-person instruction remains the district’s primary education model. For families who desire continuing online learning, this will continue to be offered through Albany Online. 

“When our COVID numbers were high at our schools, RIM offered a terrific opportunity for students to stay home and receive quality instruction,” said GAPS Interim Superintendent Rob Saxton. “As COVID diminishes, we will be expecting students to return to in-person instruction at our schools and RIM will end as an option.”

Families should soon receive information on how to register students for their boundary school.

“Much thanks to the teachers, administrators, parents and students who participated in our program. We look forward to seeing you next fall,” Saxton said.

El programa RIM llega a su fin

“Cuando nuestros números de COVID eran altos en nuestras escuelas, RIM ofreció una excelente oportunidad para que los estudiantes se quedaran en casa y recibieran instrucción de calidad”, dijo Rob Saxton, Superintendente Interino de GAPS. “A medida que disminuya COVID, esperamos que los estudiantes regresen a la instrucción en persona en nuestras escuelas y RIM terminará como una opción”.
