OSU Basketball Star Kicks Off Dr. Seuss Week

Posted on: February 28, 2017

Liberty Elementary School  has a full schedule for its Dr. Seuss Birthday Week, and things started off with plenty of enthusiasm on Hat Day on Monday morning.  Students gathered for an assembly and wore fedoras, sombreros, baseball lids, newsboy caps and stocking hats.  Special guest Sydney Wiese, a star on Oregon State University’s women’s basketball team, wore a tall Cat in the Hat-style topper, only hers was orange and black striped.

“Do you love Dr. Seuss?” Wiese asked the students, who roared their approval. “I do, too,” she replied, and then read “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”  Wiese also took a few questions from the children, saying that Friday’s victory over Stanford was great because of the sellout crowd, and answering that she has about 20 basketballs at home in Arizona — all of them popped thanks to a cactus near her hoop.  “It’s cool to interact with the kids and get them going on Monday morning,” Wiese said, after the event.

Fifth-grader BrookeLynn Welker said Wiese’s visit was awesome. “I really like basketball and especially the Beavers,” she added.  Liberty typically gets visits once or twice a year from OSU athletes, and they’re always exciting, said fourth grade teacher Melissa Crockett. “Some of the students are fans. We went to a girls’ basketball game this year, too, so they’ve watched her play,” Crockett said. The game was in December and numerous Linn and Benton county schools attended on field trips.
