What do you get when you mix bowling pins, balls of various sizes, scooter boards and padded mats? A good guess would be “chaos,” but in PE teacher Laura Bates’ class it’s an engaging game called “Sink the Ship.” The game involves four teams trying to sink the other teams’ ships (padded mats) by knocking over the bowling pins that surround each ship. Students can use lifeboats (scooter boards) to retrieve balls that are used to knock down opponent’s pins.
The game focuses on a variety of throwing skills that students have been practicing in PE for the past few weeks. Underhanded tosses, overhand throws, and stepping toward a target with the correct footwork are a few of the skills students can put into action during the game. The game is very popular across all grade levels and students are enthusiastic about playing it. “I like that it is competitive and that you have to work as a team,” said a fourth grade student. “It’s lots of fun!”
